the point is, if one decides to be a parent, he or she has an unspoken obligatory need to be selfless, regardless of the situation.

This thinking is totally wrong. There's no such a thing as jaga all the way! Parents also not obligated to will their house to the children when they passed on. As long as the parents give the kids good comfortable lives, teaches them the right moral values in life n gives them a good education all the way, the parents job is done already.
Whether the kids wanting to care for their parents in their old age is another issue altogether, much is also dependent on the financial status.
