Treatment for HIV could become like receiving a flu jab and require only one injection a year to keep it under control according to a leading pharmaceutical boss. Deborah Waterhouse, chief executive of ViiV Healthcare, which specialises in the treatment of HIV/AIDS, said that the company wants to release an annual jab within the next decade. ViiV – owned by British pharma giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK)– currently offers an injection that people with HIV need to take every two months to keep their virus levels suppressed. Sold under the brand name Cabenuva, it has been available in the UK since April last year as an alternative to the more common daily tablets.
