Warts are caused by the Human Papiloma Virus (HPV).
The virus resides in the skin tissues and may or may not cause any visible symtoms. In other words, a sex partner with no visible warts can still transmit the virus.
Transmission is via skin to skin contact. Condoms provide limited protection as transmission can easily occur via areas which are not covered by a condom.
The virus is highly contagious and it is estimated that more than 50% of sexually active adults carry the virus.
