Korean Air evacuates plane at Japan's Haneda airport after engine smoke
![]() TOKYO (REUTERS) - Korean Air Lines evacuated 319 passengers and crew from an aircraft preparing to take off from Japan’s Haneda Airport in Tokyo after smoke came from its left engine. The incident prompted authorities to temporarily close down Japan’s busiest aviation hub. Images broadcast by NHK showed the Boeing 777 on a runway being sprayed with foam by fire trucks, with four of its emergency slides deployed. The aircraft, which was due to fly to Seoul in South Korea, is powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW4000 engines. No injuries were reported, although around 30 passengers said they felt unwell, the state-owned broadcaster said. Haneda Airport, located on Tokyo Bay, handles around 550 flights a day with around 75 million passengers passing through the hub last year, making it one of the world’s busiest airport. |

Singapore Airlines flight to Shanghai delayed for 4 hours due to issue with landing gear
Chew Hui Min The Straits Times May 27, 2016 A Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight from Singapore to Shanghai was delayed for four hours on Thursday (May 26) due to a technical problem. Flight SQ830, an Airbus 380-800, was due to depart Changi Airport at 9.45am but left at only 1.46pm. The 327 passengers and crew on board took a different aircraft to their destination. Mr Lee Beng Hai, 69, told The Straits Times that he sent his friends to the airport at 7.20am, and the group of about 20 people were still waiting for the plane to depart at 1.30pm. They were initially told there the plane had a computer glitch, then that there was problem with the landing gear, the retiree said. "After initial repairs, the plane was said to be ready for takeoff but then it was aborted again due to the landing gear problem," he said. Passengers were told to disembark and wait for another plane, he wrote in an e-mail. His friend questioned if the plane should have had a "full system check" before boarding, he added. A spokesman for SIA said the plane "experienced a technical issue with the landing gear system while it was on ground". "The aircraft returned to gate twice for engineering checks, after which a replacement aircraft was deployed." All passengers were served light refreshments prior to boarding, SIA said. Mr Lee said these included biscuits, and that his friends were given a report on the cause of the delay. |

Vietnam Airlines finalizes stake sale to Japanese carrier
Thanh Nien News HO CHI MINH CITY - Sunday, May 29, 2016 10:49 ![]() Vietnam national carrier has officially inked a deal to sell a 8.77 percent stake to Japan’s biggest airline All Nippon Airways, making it a strategic investor. The contract worth more than US$109 million was signed Saturday in Tokyo during a visit by Vietnam’s newly-elected Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc. Complete payment will be made by July 1, news website VnExpress reported. The new partnership, with some representative from the Japanese airline joining Vietnam Airlines’ board of directors, is set to help expand the carriers’ networks. The two planned to launch a program from October 30 to jointly operate 30 domestic routes in Japan and Vietnam, and ten routes between the two countries. The cooperation is not only limited to passenger transport, but also in cargo transport, in-flight and ground services, including aircraft maintenance. Vietnam Airlines, which now controls nearly half of the domestic passenger air market, is offering 66 flights a week to Japan. Following the deal, its state ownership will be cut to 87.73 percent. Vietnam Airlines has plans to to sell more chunks of shares to reduce the rate to 75 percent, and then 65 percent, according to local media reports. The carrier has divested from 13 non-core businesses, including finance, insurance and real estate companies, in another restructuring effort. It now has stakes in 19 companies, including budget airline Jetstar Pacific and Cambodia-based airline Angkor Air. Vietnam Airlines is expecting revenue to grow 12.7 percent to VND77.8 trillion ($3.45 billion) this year, and an increase of 15.5 percent in the number of passengers, to 20.1 million. |

AirAsia has had $1 billion takeover offer for leasing unit: report
![]() Asia's largest budget airline AirAsia Bhd (AIRA.KL) has received a $1 billion offer for its aircraft leasing unit, Bloomberg News quoted Chief Executive Tony Fernandes as saying. AirAsia intends to divest the business, Asia Aviation Capital Ltd, at some point, Fernandes told Bloomberg on Monday but added that the offer needs to be discussed further with the board. He was quoted as saying that the business was a "powerful cash generator". Reuters reported in October that AirAsia has been in talks with lessors, including cash-rich Chinese companies, to sell a stake in its leasing subsidiary. Chinese companies are seeking to grow aggressively in the leasing industry that provides about 40 percent of the planes used by airlines globally. Following the Reuters report, AirAsia said late last year that it had received approaches from investors to co-invest in the leasing unit. |

'Your flight has been delayed': Do Vietnamese airlines play fair with passengers? HO CHI MINH CITY - Tuesday, May 31, 2016 16:42 Nguyen Xuan Duc booked a flight with Jetstar Pacific to travel from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi one morning earlier this month. He received a message from the carrier the night before notifying that the flight would be delayed until the afternoon. Since he could not find any other options, he had to accept the delay, which meant canceling some of his business plans. He received no compensation because, technically, he was informed by the airline. Travelers in Vietnam have long come to terms with the fact that flight delays and cancellations can happen daily. But with the problem showing no sign of getting better, many are now demanding that at least carriers compensate them fairly for all the expenses incurred and the opportunities missed. Some even hope that substantial compensations may eventually scare airlines into improving on-time performance. Currently the numbers do not make any local carriers look good. Statistics from the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam listed 639 delays and cancellations, or 13.4 percent of all flights, between April 11 and May 17. Jetstar Pacific topped the list with 19 percent of flights delayed and 2 percent canceled, followed by Vietjet Air with a 17 percent delay rate. Flag carrier Vietnam Airlines delayed 275 or 11 percent of its flights. The Civil Aviation Administration cited bad planning as a major cause. Vietnam now requires airlines to pay up to VND400,000 (US$18) a passenger for delays of domestic flights and $150 for international flights. Those figures are higher than the compensation rates before July last year. But many passengers say that carriers should pay more. Huong Tran, a Vietnam Airlines passenger affected by a three-day delay in January, said she and other passengers had to go through the check-in process three times, one each day, as the carrier was not even sure when it could give them another flight from Paris to Hanoi. After the third time, Tran said, she had no energy left to drag her luggage back to the hotel again. “I just stayed at the airport and waited for 18 hours.” The support she received through the whole ordeal with a loss of stress and frustration was six $17 meals and $223 in cash. Such amount was little compared to European rules which require EU-based carriers to pay passengers up to 600 euros, or nearly $670, each for delays of more than three hours. Nguyen Thien Tong, a respected aviation expert in Vietnam, said the compensation rates for delays and cancellations are now too low. “It’s not enough to cover the passengers’ cost for travel, accommodation and meals during the wait, as well as their missing opportunities.” Tong said local carriers could totally set their schedule better to save customers from delays and cancellations. He said the carriers now cram more flights into their daily schedule than they can actually operate, which means they have to cancel some flights in the last hours or minutes and combine flights with many empty seats, usually from three flights into two. “The compensation needs to be high enough to force the carriers to stick to their schedule.” |

Vietnam Airlines flights delayed as passenger opens emergency door
HO CHI MINH CITY - Thursday, June 02, 2016 16:48 Three Vietnam Airlines flights from Ho Chi Minh City were delayed on Thursday after one passenger opened an emergency door on an aircraft that had just landed and released the evacuation slide. A Vietnam Airlines representative said the Vietnamese passenger, 58, opened the door soon after the aircraft from Hanoi arrived at Tan Son Nhat International Airport. The aircraft was scheduled to fly to Hong Kong next, but that flight had to be delayed, causing damage of nearly US$20,000, according to the representative. As the Airbus aircraft had to be pulled out of flight schedule for technical check, two other Vietnam Airlines flights to Da Nang and Hanoi were also affected. No penalty has been announced. But opening emergency doors is an act punishable by between VND10-20 million under Vietnam’s aviation rules |
